savingmybacon6Sometimes it’s the little things that keep you going ’til the end of the day.  What’s Saving My Bacon is a round up of small, seemingly insignificant things that help get me through the daily grind.

Although March has had some gorgeous sunny days in the 70s, it’s also had a fair share of drizzly, soggy days.  (My oldest son once had a field trip snowed out May 1st, so it’s not safe to put away the all the winter clothing quite yet).  Even on beautiful days, our house stays cool and the nights are chilly, so staying warm and cozy is the name of the game right now.  Here’s what’s saving my bacon during the fickle spring weather:

  1. A heated throw–I received this as a Christmas gift, and it is wonderful.  I use it every day, usually at the end of the day when I sit down for a few minutes with my husband to catch up on adult conversation before bed.  We keep our old house pretty cool, and while this suits the majority of my family just fine, I have ice water for blood, so this blanket is the best.
  2. Baseball–We’re a baseball family; it’s our favorite sport.  My oldest two have had a few batting practices and team meetings.  As a parent, it’s extremely fulfilling to watch my kids work hard and improve at something they love.  It also gives me hope that there are sunny days ahead, and the cold will soon be a thing of the past.  So I’ll keep dreaming of peanuts and cracker jacks, and warmer weather.savingmybacon3
  3. My fitbit–my husband and I got fitbits for Christmas, and with the new year, came new fitness goals.  Being able to track exercise, food and sleep has been a total game changer, and I feel so much better when I make those three cornerstones a priority.

  4. Fuzzy pants–something tells me Madame Chic wouldn’t approve of these (also a Christmas gift), but they’re just so warm and soft that I’m wearing them more often than not, when I’m at home.
  5. Good books–especially when paired with the heated throw and fuzzy pants!  You can see what I’ve been reading recently here, here and here.  Also check out my recommendations for books that boys like here and here.

  6. Burning essential oils–I’ve said goodbye to scented candles, and have started burning essential oils.  Simply add a few tablespoons of water and several drops of oil to the top of the burner, and light a tea light below.  Clove and orange oil was heavenly during the holidays, and now I’m lightening it up for spring with lavender. (Keep a close eye on the burner and replenish with water when needed).

  7. With the spring showers, comes muddy footprints tracked in my house (both boy and canine). Black Friday weekend, I bought the Rubbermaid Reveal Spray Mop Kit on Amazon, and it’s a total game changer.  Our house is entirely hardwood and tile, so I use it about every day, and our floors are so much cleaner.  It’s much faster to use than a mop and bucket, and the floors dry incredibly quickly.  The reusable pads get tossed in with a load of towels, and I like that you can use any cleaner you want–I use white vinegar and water for tile and Murphy’s Oil Soap for wood.
  8. Marie Kondo recommends cleaning out your purse at the end of every day.  One of my greatest frustrations in life is shuffling through an unorganized handbag.  I like to buy nice purses, and carry them for years and I’ve been searching for one for quite awhile.  I found the perfect one at an after Christmas sale, and since it’s bright shiny and new, I’ve been diligent about keeping it cleaned out and organized.

That’s what’s saving my bacon this month–what small things are helping you get through the day?
