We’re all big readers at our house. Here are some old favorites and new discoveries that we’ve been reading to our five year old.
The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt, Illustrations by Oliver Jeffers–this fun sequel tells the stories of Duncan’s crayons that are scattered near and far. Some get eaten and puked up by his dog, others get melted in the sun together, and a glow in the dark crayon remains lost in the basement. The accompanying glow in the dark drawing really glows, and remarkably feels like crayon.
The crayons just want to come home to live in their crayon box, but will they all be able to make their way back to Duncan? We love this book–such a simple idea that turned out brilliantly.
Musk Ox is new to us, but these two books by Erin Cavatingan, and illustrated by Matthew Myers have made us instant fans. Fun loving Musk Ox and responsible Zebra teach kids how to count, but in a much more entertaining way than a traditional counting book, in Musk Ox Counts. In The World According to Musk Ox, Musk Ox and Zebra visit all the continents, while gently bickering and sharing facts about the places they visit. These books are especially fun if read out loud in character voices.
The Complete Tales of Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne–this is our slightly battered copy, and I believe we bought it before our oldest was born, but we were inspired to get it back out after reading about how Winnie-the-Pooh came to be. If you’ve never read the ‘real’ Pooh stories, you should. The language is wonderful, and the stories are a real treat.
A Story for Bear by Dennis Haseley, illustrations by Jim LaMarche–this sweet story is about the love of reading, and the unlikely friendship between a bear a woman. Little ones will understand it’s a story about sharing and being kind, but I love this book because it’s also is about how reading transforms our lives.
After seeing a set of Beatrix Potter books at a flea market, and rereading the article about Potter’s lost story (out this fall), I was inspired to get this collection of stories out again. I believe we also purchased this volume before our oldest was born, but it hasn’t been in rotation lately, so it was fun to revisit old favorites.
As always, please leave me your book recommendations in the comments!
