Candy spoons are fun and easy to make, and they make great gifts for Christmas or Valentine’s Day.  Put them in a basket with a pretty mug, hot chocolate mix or tea, and homemade marshmallows for hot chocolate.  We make cinnamon, peppermint and butterscotch, which all pair with hot chocolate or tea, just skip dipping them in chocolate if they’re meant for a tea lover.

Materials: hard candy, ziplock baggies, hammer, candy spoon mold, cookie sheet, chocolate bark, oven, double boiler, sprinkles

Prep: Preheat oven to 300 degrees F

Step One: unwrap candies and place them in a ziplock baggie–double bagging them is best.  Take a hammer and crush candy.

If using peppermints, you want fairly large pieces for pretty spoons, they should look like this:

Step Two: Fill the candy mold (mine is Wilton, and I bought it at Michael’s Arts and Crafts.  Don’t forget their 40% off coupon!) with large chunks of peppermints, placing the red stripes down.

I often put a whole peppermint in what will be the bowl of the spoon.

Step Three: Place the mold on a cookie sheet, and bake at 300 degrees F for 9 minutes.

Step Four: Remove from oven, and if needed, fill gaps in spoons in with small pieces of candy.  Return to oven for 3-5 minutes, depending on how much fill in candy you added.

Step Five: Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.  The sides of the mold will pull away from the candy spoon easily.  Take the bowl of the spoon out of the mold first, followed by the handle.  If you break a spoon, you can return it to the mold and reheat it.  Gently chip off any excess candy from the spoons, if necessary.

In the photo below, the three spoons on the right were made with large chunks of peppermint, placed red side down in the mold.  This makes the prettiest spoons.  The three spoons on the left were made with tiny shards of mostly white peppermint pieces–still equally tasty, just not quite as pretty.

Step Six: While the candy spoons are cooling, set up a double boiler with water in the bottom and chocolate bark in the top, over medium high heat.

Step Seven: Once candy spoons are cool and chocolate bark is melted, dip the bowls of the spoons in the chocolate, and set on waxed paper.  Quickly cover chocolate in sprinkles, and let dry.
