Being a mom of boy readers–I’m passing along titles that we’ve enjoyed at our house.  Girls very well may enjoy these books too–I just don’t have any daughters to get first hand opinions from.

The Timmy Failure Series by Stephan Pastis  Both my big boys love this series; the 10 year old has been known to polish off one whole book in an evening.  Hysterically funny, the book details the life and adventures of Timmy Failure, founder of his own detective agency, and his business partner, Total the polar bear.  Our library has this series on audiobook and playaway, but I think the illustrations add so much to the story that I recommend the actual paper books.

Archie Greene and the Magician’s Secret by D.D. Everest.  I did read this entire book before giving it to my boys, because I wasn’t sure if I would be comfortable with it.  If you’re okay with the Harry Potter series, you’ll likely be okay with this book.  I thought it was wildly imaginative, and look forward to future books in the series.  Here’s my favorite part of the book, a definition of an Imagining Glass:

“Sometimes mistaken for an ordinary magnifying glass, an Imagining Glass is a magical instrument that magnifies the imagination of the person who looks through it.  The words ‘imagination’ and ‘magic’ are closely linked, and many leading authorities…argue that human imagination represents the last vestige of the magical power we all once possessed.”

The Vanishing Island: The Chronicles of the Black Tulip by Barry Wolverton  This book is full of pirate-y goodness and adventure, but it may not be for highly sensitive boys.  I let my 10 year old read it, but held off on handing it over to my 8 year old.  It’s downright gross at times, but in a way that boys love.  There’s some dark elements–think shark attacks, walking the plank, and a small bit of violence.  I think most boys with strong stomachs will love it.  I recommend for ages 10-12.

The next two baseball books are so well loved by my sons we bought them their own copies.  These are both frequently reread at out house.

Hothead by Cal Ripken, Jr.  Hothead focuses on the hero of the story learning to control his emotions, and conduct himself with good sportsmanship.  These are great lessons both on and off the field, and it’s so important that boys learn to deal with their emotions.

Mudville by Kurtis Scaletta Moundville is a town which is home to a 22 year long rainstorm–obviously not the best conditions for baseball. When 12 year old Roy gets home from baseball camp, he discovers his father has taken in a foster child, Sturgis.  Shortly after Sturgis arrives, the rain stops, so the baseball can begin.  The characters in this book are well developed, and much of the book focuses on their relationships with each other.

Do you have any recommendations of books that boys would like?
