Things You Just Don’t Want to Buy at the Store–Ranch Dressing

Some things are so much tastier than their store bought counterparts, and so incredibly easy to make at home, that it’s positively sinful to buy them at the store.  One of those things is ranch dressing.  Better yet, it only requires ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen.

Get ready to taste the best ranch dressing you’ve ever had in your life.

Combine 3/4 c of sour cream with half a cup of milk, and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice in a jar.  (Fyi, Daisy makes a nice sour cream that’s free from additives and preservatives and is easy to find in supermarkets).

Put the lid on tightly, and shake well, until all ingredients are combined.  Next, add one clove of garlic, pressed and minced; 1 tablespoon of freshly chopped chives, 1/2 teaspoon of dried parsley, 1/2 teaspoon of dried dill weed, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder to the jar, attach the lid again, and shake until well combined.  Store in the refrigerator for up to one week.

This makes a fairly thick dressing–if you prefer yours thinner, add additional milk 1 tablespoon at a time until it reaches the desired consistency.

If you don’t have a chive plant, you need to get one immediately.  They’re very hardy and easy to grow, and can be grown inside in a flower pot, or in the garden.  They’re a perennial, so once you buy a plant, they come back every year.  Mine lives pretty much year round outside in zone 6, and I’ve transplanted it several times, and it just keeps thriving.

Chive flowers are edible, and can be used to flavor vinegar dressings.  (You still want to pick the flowers even if you choose not to eat them, so that the seeds don’t spread through your garden).  Fresh chives add so much flavor to your food, and are incredibly simple to grow (they do especially well planted near carrots).

Also, if you don’t have a parsley plant, you need one of those too.  I don’t really think parsley has much flavor, but we plant some every year to attract caterpillars and watch them turn into butterflies.

Do yourself a favor, get some parsley and chives to plant, and you’ll be able to make delicious ranch dressing, chive blossom dressing, and watch caterpillars turn into butterflies all summer long.
